Software
The software is the programs that you use to tell your computer what to do. For a web site, you will need at least two programs: an HTML Editor, and a File Transfer Protocol (or FTP) Program. The other programs listed are highly recommended. You do need these to protect your investment in your work. While you can run a web site without a firewall and an antivirus program, every time you go on line, you run the risk of something damaging you computer. |
HTML Editor
Arachnophilia is the only HTML Editor that I use. The tutorial is excellent. It works with most any browser. It does NOT imbed it's own code. It does not mess with the code you write. It is simple. FTP Program
An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program is needed for you to transmit your files to your web site hosting company's server computers. Not only your HTML files, but your graphics, sound files, and so on. If you want anything on the web, you have to send it to your host so they can put it on the web. (Yeah, I know, "duh!") Cute FTP takes the files you select, and hands them up to your host. That's your upload. It also let's me select files, and hands them down to my computer. That's the download. This is important because you will want a exact copy of what is on your hosting company's server computers. No hosting company is stupid enough to guarentee 100% perfection. California earthquakes, Kansas tornados, Mississippi floods, Carolina hurricanes, Nebraska lightening, anything could cause down time. Hosting companies often will set up a new file folder for cgi (and perl) files. You will want a copy of these files, so that nothing is lost. Firewall
A Firewall is a must have. It limits access to your computer. It is a two way gate. It also prevent "Spyware" from secretly sending personal information over the Internet. "Spyware" will contact the manufactoring company, and report; who you are, where you've been, what you did there, how long you have been there, lots of other things that you may not want everybody knowing. Anitvirus
It scans you computer looking for viruses. It will take what ever action you deem appropriate. The more you are on line, the more you need to protect you investment. Antivirus programs sits happily in the background, awaiting duty. Leave your computer idle for a period of time, (you say how long) and it will scan your hard drive to make sure no virus slipped past. This is a must have.
