A Firewall forms a gated wall between your system and the Internet. It is the sentinel at the gate. It will ask YOU if you want access allowed. This protects your information from being scanned by an intruder, guards against many types of malicious email attachments. It is a two way gate. It will preventing programs from sending information out. Spyware, as it is called, will seek a path to the main company that produced it, and give that company information about YOU. REAL programs (such as REAL Player) will do this. How do I know? My Firewall will ask if I want Real Player to be allowed access to the internet. I don't even have REAL Player turned on. Just what this information is, and how it is used, depends on the company, I guess. Personally, I don't like any of it. That's why I own a Firewall.
