The Service Provider is the company that grants you access to the internet. Service Providers act as the connection beween the Surfer's modem (that's yours), and the World Wide Web (That's everyone else). There are basically two types of service providers. Dial Up, and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). |
Dial Up
The first was Prodigy. Now there are plenty to choose from. It is slower than DSL. It tends to keep your phone line busy for quite a while. (Although, there is now a switch board that you can purchase. It will allow you to receive phone calls while you are on line. You must have call waiting to use it.) The methods of payment are easy. You can use a credit card. Earth Link and America On Line will take a type of electronic check (an automatic charge against your bank account). Many people who do not have a credit card can use this option. NetZero Platinum Internet Service - $9.95 per mo. Accelerated dial up could be just the happy medium you want. NetZero HiSpeed - Surf the web up to 5x faster! |
Digital Subscriber Line
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is the latest in internet connections. Here you two more choices. There is Telephone Line, which plugs into the Telephone Company. There is also Television Line, which plugs into your local Cable T. V. company. Either is faster then Dial Up. Both allow you to receive calls while you are on line. The methods of payment are easy. You can use your credit card (for say Earth Link), or pay the extra charge with your utility bill, be it phone, or cable. However, most will not take an electronic check. Cable T. V. Lines can get bogged down during peak hours, and is not availible in areas that don't have Cable T. V. service. (Ya think!) Telephone Lines usually run fastest, and is availible most everywhere.
