Universial Resourse Locator (ULR) tells people where you are. It is your web site address. Just as you can have several Mailing Addresses, (Work, Home, P.O.Box) you can have several URLs. Each URL can have different names at that address. The Domain Name is the parent address. The Sub-Domains are sister sites under the parent site.

This is your "www.myname.com" web address. Many people have done tons of research on the best domain names. To be sure, most of the great ones are taken. If your site is not a business site, your name is fine. If you have a business site, the your company name is important to your business. It tells people all about you, what you do, and gives them a clue what you are not. "Custom Beading" tells people the your company does bead work, but not gold or silver jewelry.
